About Yoga
Yoga is at least 5,000 years old and originated in India. It is not a religion, but it is a spiritual practice, one that will help you know yourself better and feel better. The practice we in the West know as yoga, that is, the physical poses and breathing, or Hatha yoga, is actually only a small part of the total practice of yoga. But it is a fine place to start.
I feel strongly that beginners should start at the beginning to get a good foundation in the poses, which is why I teach in 7 week sessions. Although at first it may seem that yoga poses are about getting your body into a certain shape, over time, usually 6-12 months, you begin to realize much more is going on. At that point you will be a "continuing student," and able to join one of the level 2 classes. If you have been taking classes elsewhere, you may wish to drop-in to try out one of my classes. Please inquire first.

There are many different styles of Hatha yoga. I have been trained by Iyengar teachers across the country. Iyengar yoga, named after a living yoga master in India, is known for its precision, attention to details of alignment, and use of props.
Watch a senior Iyengar yoga teacher teach parsvakonasana, or side angle pose, to get an idea of the depth of precision involved! watch here Geeta Iyengar, Iyengar' s daughter, pioneered "restorative" yoga, a way of using bolsters, blankets and other props to enable one to hold poses longer and give the body the most benefit.
The practice of yoga brings increased flexibility, strength and stamina, and improved concentration. Students have come to my classes for relief from mental and emotional stress, improved energy level and to have fun!
